John 12: 20-33

Call to Celebration

Holy One, we come celebrating the gift of life.

We enter this space to sow and to cultivate.

We recognize our need for more light.

We turn our hearts toward life-giving and sustaining practices that will enable us to be sources of life and light.

We surrender our minds to the teachings of Jesus.

May we take on the discipline of seeing and knowing one another as you see and know us.

Amen

Offertory

Divine One, may we become the embodiment of your grace. May we place greater value on the internal and not the external. May we speak wholeness and truth. Empower us to be healers and not dividers. May we be the repairers of all that is broken.  Amen

Noadiah

"YHWH has met" or "YHWH has become manifest," from Hebrew y'd, "to meet, appear," and yāh, a shortened form of YHWH (Neh 6:14) Noadiah is one of only four named women prophets in the Hebrew Bible (the others are Deborah, Huldah, and Miriam). She appears once in Nehemiah's reference to high-placed opponents who sought to intimidate Nehemiah, the governor of the postexilic province of Yehud (c. 444 B.C.E.). Context implies that she too had high status. Like the other prominent opponents in this verse (Tobiah and Sanballat), she could have opposed his building of the walls of Jerusalem. Noadiah was probably Judahite; otherwise, Nehemiah would have called her foreign. We know nothing further about her, but her presence establishes the fact that in the postexilic era, as before, a woman could be a prophet and thus serve in a role of inspired leadership as a recognized spokesperson for the divine. by Tamara Cohn Eskenazi
